Bone, joint, disc and nerve injures do not happen in isolation. Often the muscles that are supporting these structures are also affected. This is why soft tissue therapies are an essential part of any chiropractic and physiotherapy treatment. Soft tissues include muscles, tendons, ligaments, connective fibres and fascia.
The Goals of Treatment Are:
1) To reduce tissue tension/stiffness
2) To lengthen shortened/contracted tissues
3) To break down scar tissue
Different Soft Tissue Techniques
At Edgar Family Chiropractic, there are several different techniques that we use to treat soft tissues:
Active Release Technique (ART) - a soft tissue technique that incorporates movement into the therapy. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension by the chiropractor combined with very specific patient movements. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART.
Trigger Point Therapy - a technique that addresses tight bands (knots) within the muscles by using direct pressure and depth to the tight bands to release the tension in these knots.
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitated (PNF) Stretching - passive stretching of the targeted muscle (done by the chiropractor) is done immediately after an isometric contraction (by the patient).
